Build a People’s Power Grid Petition Launch!
Sacred Earth and 350.org have come together to launch a petition urging the Carney government to deliver a People’s Power Grid, an East-West Grid that provides affordable, reliable, renewable electricity to people from coast to coast to coast.
Canada’s electrical transmission infrastructure is becoming increasingly outdated and inefficient. With an East-West Grid, we have the opportunity to re-envision a more sustainable energy system - one that is informed by traditional Indigenous knowledge and directly supports energy sovereignty within our communities.
As we move away from fossil fuels, progressive energy policies can transition us to renewable energy while supporting workers and communities. An East-West Grid would employ hundreds of thousands of workers, meet our growing electricity needs, and prioritize interprovincial and territorial connections over dependence on the U.S.A.
we demand:
that the federal government invest a total of $30 billion, over 5 years, to fund critical transmission linkages between the provinces and territories in a way that aligns with climate science, prioritizes public ownership, and upholds Indigenous rights.
We can decolonize and decentralize energy systems by including Indigenous leadership in: utilities regulation, infrastructure ownership, partnerships, and policy development processes.
By committing to these actions we can all do our part to help advance self-determination, energy sovereignty, and reconciliation.
“Our communities are actively leading the way towards a just transition. Combined with political support, and strong energy policy, we can accelerate the shift toward a renewable energy future.
Ultimately, our current energy landscape needs deep systemic change - the climate crisis requires solutions grounded in Indigenous self-determination, the full and meaningful inclusion of our communities, and the upholding of our rights, knowledges, sovereignty, and leadership”
