OUR story
about us
Sacred Earth is an Indigenous women-led organization dedicated to advancing a just transition for Indigenous communities which are aiming to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and build resilience in the face of climate change. Sacred Earth works in solidarity with Indigenous Nations who are at the frontlines of ongoing struggle against extractivism and climate change, as well as healing justice, language revitalization, and cultural resilience.
our beginning
Melina Laboucan-Massimo, a Lubicon Cree woman from the Alberta Tar Sands founded Sacred Earth in 2015 after campaigning on social, environmental and climate issues for over 20 years.
After witnessing first hand a major oil spill in her community, Melina knew she needed to build climate solutions and a just transition in Indigenous communities that are impacted detrimentally by fossil fuels.
Beginning as a Master’s thesis, she led the implementation of a 20.8-kilowatt solar system that powered the health center in the heart of the tar sands where her community of Little Buffalo is located.
Since 2015, Sacred Earth has worked on just transition, Indigenous sovereignty, climate & energy literacy in communities as well as climate policy regionally, nationally, and internationally. We also work to decolonize the climate movement and organize to stop destructive fossil fuel projects.
